  • Every year the hummers hit our feeders on their way south. Last year Hurricane Ike came through in September and we didn't have many. I would have to say just making an estimate that including the hummingbirds that you cant see in the video there were at least 80 here at their peak.  They consumed about 1/2 gallon of nectar a day. I have video from two years ago with even more than that. I need to find it and post it. They have started to move on now and only a dozen or so remain. I hate to see them go, its so nice to watch them in the evening.  If you like the hummer action and want to help the humming birds on their migration put out some feeders the last week of August in the Houston area. The nectar can be purchased in clear or red or you can make your own 1 cup of sugar to one quart of water. I use the red to start the season and when I run out of it I make my own for the rest of the season. They like either just as well but the red attracts their attention. Watch my video below and be sure to vote.
